Ooo!! Shiny!!

I skipped Film Festival Fridays today in favor of showing you my new toy!!! (Or rather, what my new toy can do.) Yesterday, Jon and I became the proud owners of a Nikon SLR. I had a chance to give it a good test run today and I so happy with the results! Here are some of my best shots. (Keep in mind, I haven't got this camera completely figured out yet.)

Oh, the beauteous photos I shall take! (Don't worry, I'll try not to become that creepy photographer lady.)

When you're an artist...........

..........you spend 15-20 minutes of your walk sketching a pile of garbage!

True story. I was wandering down the street and found the most well composed heap of trash I've ever seen. So naturally, I had do a few sketches of it.

Is this weird? Quite probably. But that's what being an artist is all about, right?

Film Festival Fridays: The Cat Piano

Today's film is called The Cat Piano. Its' made by The People's Republic of Animation, directed by Eddie White and Ari Gibbson, produced by Jessica Brentnal and narrated by Nick Cave. Be warned, this one is a tad dark, disturbing and morbid, but the animation is gorgeous and the narration is beautifully done.

As a historical side note, there are a few literary references to a bizarre instrument called the Cat organ or Cat piano that used tortured cats to make music. Fortunately, we have no official records of the nasty thing actually being built.

Sketches, February-March '12

I realized I hadn't posted my sketches in a while. So, here they are!

Some gestures of Niki, the husky who lives next to us.

I was attempting to draw Totoro. Instead, it turned into this.

These are gesture sketches of grape hyacinths

Not thrilled with this one, but figured I'd include it anyway.

An abstraction I made in art class with tissue paper and watercolor.

There you have it. Not super exciting, just your basic sketches of stuff I happen to see/make up.

Ink and water

Hello everyone!

I'd say it's high time there was some art on this art blog of mine. Here are some experimentings I made last night at art class. The technique was really simple; I bushed water on watercolor paper and then drew with a liquid gel pen while the paper was still wet. I love the bleeding effect, especially on the buildings. I've been wanting to play around with rending architecture and this seems like a good place to start. The other neat thing is that I did these all from my head. As I've probably already mentioned, the stuff I make up usually looks stupid, but I'm really pleased with how this turned out. I must be getting better. ^_^

I'm really looking forward to playing around with this style a little more, maybe adding a few other mediums to the mix. Expect to see more of it soon!

sincerely,
me
