January '15 Sketches

Lots of sketches to share this month, and some from last month, too. I've actually started working specifically in my sketchbook once a week and it's been awesome! Making time to sit down and try out new, weird ideas has produced a ton of neat variety in my work and given me lots of good pages to choose from. This is definitely a habit I want to continue. ^_^

Miscellaneous Art Stuff

Today's post is a bit scattered. I didn't really have a finished project to blog about, so I rounded up some random stuff from a couple different projects.

I did this quote for my lovely mother-in-law's birthday and while I'm happy with how some of it turned out (like the little flowers and vines on either side), there are some things I'd change if I took a second pass at it.

Then there are these orchid drawing/painting/study things. Orchids were harder to draw than I expected. :-/

And finally, I have these Fennec fox doodles for an illustration I want to do soon. I still haven't figured out how best to simplify and stylize them yet.

To be honest, none of this stuff is really my "best work". Some of it didn't turn out like I'd hoped and some of it just isn't finished. All of it came up short.

In some ways, coming up short is almost worse than failing epically. When your failure is undeniably spectacular, you're almost forced to laugh at it and move on so you don't get pulled into a crushing cycle of despair and hopelessness. And then there's all those quotes by famous people about how failing is good for you, ect. (Personally, I wish there were more quotes by famous people who said “Yeah, failing stinks. I get it.) But when you don't fail epically, when all your efforts are almost, but not quite, something you can be proud of, that's when it's hard. Then, your work is simply mediocre, lukewarm, and forgettable. And, even if other people think what you did was good, you still have to a gnawing sense of disappointment in yourself.

But the truth is, some days are just mediocre. That's a part of the art making process. And when those days come, it's just as important to show up and try our best as it is on the days when life is wonderful. Maybe even more so.

So, even though today wasn't my best day, I'm determined to show up and keep trying. Because eventually, all that trying, all that mediocrity will add up to something good and make the slow, tedious journey 100% worth while.

January skill building: Fennec Foxes

Random fact: Fennec foxes are one of my favorite animals. I haven't been able to decide if they're my favorite favorite animal; that position seems to be a four way tie between fennec foxes, regular foxes, pandas, and red pandas. Maybe I'll just say they're all on Team Bethany's Favorite Animal. Or, maybe I could combine them all artistically and come up with the Ultimate Favorite Animal: The Red Fennec Panda Fox!! Or, maybe that's going a bit too far.....

Anyway, I decide to pay homage to these adorable little guys in an upcoming art project, which gave me an excuse to practice drawing them. The actual drawing part proved to be more challenging than I'd have like, but getting to look at their cuteness every day totally made up for it. ^_^

Bear and Fox Rorschach painting

Welcome to 2015, everyone! It is very cold in my part of the world and I'm currently waiting for a repair man to come take a look at the water dripping from my kitchen ceiling, so please pardon me if I seem a bit distracted. :-/

Anyway, this piece is pretty cool. Maybe not as fully awesome as it could be, but I give it a B- for effort. And, for something that originated as leftover paint from another project that I turned into a blot painting, it exceeded my non existent expectations.

Normally, I'm not very good at seeing cool stuff in Rorschach tests. (They all look like pelvic bones to me.) But this design just sort of, emerged, and I loosely inked it in. To further distinguish the bear and fox from the rest of the paint, I scanned the image in Photoshop and toned down the background a bit. I probably could have tweaked it more, but I decided it was good enough for now.

So yeah, first project of the year!! Hopefully, there are many more, even cooler ones to follow.

(Also, since starting this blog post, the repair man came, fixed the leak, and will bring a replacement ceiling tile soon. Yay!! ^_^)
