August '14 Sketchbook

I did better this month in my sketchbook than last month. I also ended up with a wider range of stuff, too.

August marks a few milestones, actually. I started this blog three years ago in August and as of this month, I have been blogging every Thursday (with a few exceptions) for a whole year!

Oh, and......

Plein air painting

I've been trying to practice "en plein air" painting, (which means "in the open air" in French), over the past two weeks. Unfortunately, I'm really, really terrible at it. (In fact, I just got back from painting and all my attempts were so bad, I only kept one of them.) These are the best ones I have so far. But, I'm determined to keep working on it in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, I'll get the tiniest bit better some day.

August skill building: Koalas

This week I did a ton of koala studies for an up coming project. Since this project calls for a solid understanding of the koala facial structure, I spent some time really trying to learn the shapes and anatomy through more refined, extensive studies, which is pretty different from my usual "quick sketch, then move on" process. Some of the drawings look a little weird, but I do have a much better understanding of koalas then I did when I started.

Perspective exercise goal completed!!

After a month of less than thrilling exercises, I finally reached my goal of 100 perspective studies!! (And then I did one more for good measure, bringing the total to 101.) I can now confidently claim that I have a good grasp on the fundamentals of 1, 2, and 3 point perspective. I'm a long way from mastery, but at least I'm off to a good start.
