Drawing Prompts

Have you ever sat down to draw and your brain suddenly goes blank on topics? This happens to me way more often than I'd like to admit. I've always wanted to try one of the those drawing prompt books, but never got around to getting one. Then, I realized I could make my own by writing words or phrases in a sketchbook and going back later to fill them in. So far, I've filled one book already. Here are some of my favorites. 

These are nice little exercise to do at night, because they give your brain one last creative challenge and don't take too long. I'm definitely planning on keeping this up.

Best Doodles of 2013

So, at the beginning of this year, I had the lofty goal of drawing one doodle every day, then posting it on a tumblr account. That didn't happen. It turns out I'm really bad at doing something, even something as simple a doodling every day, consistently for a whole year. However, despite technically being a failure, this project did produce a lot of really fun doodles. I thought it would be cool to gather up my favorite ones and feature them all together in one post, seeing as how 2013 will be over soon. Enjoy!

Digital art: Hipster Lightbulb

Ok, so awhile back, I did this doodle and feel in love with it. (There's something about the hipster culture I find amusing and a bit endearing.) I've been working on putting together a legit portfolio to give my work a bit more direction and this piece seemed like a good candidate for that project. It also gave me a chance to try my hand at producing a digital piece with a bit more polish. So, here is the original doodle...

...and here is the final product! 

I am super, duper, uber happy with it! ^_^  I still haven't figured out what I want to do about my signature, but that's something I'll probably keep playing around with. Anyway, here is Hipster Lightbulb, ready to take on the world. Or at least, the parts that aren't mainstream.

Character Design: Broken Robot

If you've been checking in on my doodle tumblr (which you can do via a link on the side of this page), you may recall seeing this guy. 

 Everyone, meet Broken Robot! Yes, it's not a very original name, but I'm not sure if he has any other yet, so that's what I've been calling him. I was writing in my prayer journal about what it means to be broken one night and this character just popped into my head. I took me several tries to get him just right, as you can tell from the pictures below. 

I'm just starting to figure out what his story is, which is very exciting for me! I'll keep you posted on how that develops, but for now, I wanted to be sure you all had a chance to meet my new friend. ^_^

Also, I made some changes to how the blog looks. What do you think? I'm pretty happy with it!

On going art projects. And Post 100!!!

In addition to a ton of short terms projects, I also have a few long term art goals for this year, one of which is my Doodle Project. My goal is to draw a (nearly) daily doodle for all of 2013! So far, I've done pretty well; I only missed two days last weekend. I've also created a tumblr account to document my progress. I'm also working on a 52 Self-Portrait challenge and I will share some of the results periodically.

Also, guess what!?! This is my 100th post!! I have to admit, I can't believe I made it this far. I mean, it took me long enough to get here, but the fact that I'm still plugging away at this blog is impressive in and of itself. Thank you so much to everyone who has ever read, commented or encouraged me. Cookies and chai all around!!!
