June '15 Sketchbook

Since being out of town last week, I was worried I wouldn't have much in my sketchbook to blog about for this month! But I finished up a few environment studies from my last sketchbook, added them to what I already had and ended up with a nice little collection. My sister's wedding was lovely and it was great to see so many family members! Now, I just need to get my life back in order and start drawing again!

Also, Happy Half Christmas!! I know we have a lot of summer left to go, but I'm already day dreaming of cooler weather. :-)

June '15 Skill building: poses, hairstyles, and hands

I set a ridiculous challenge for myself this summer; draw 1,000 skill building drawings by September 1st. Yes, I know I'm crazy, but I have this tendency to set over the top challenges for myself in the summer. I mean, if I'm going to be sweaty and miserable anyway, I might as well be getting better at art as well, right? I'll keep you all in the loop about how this project goes over the next few months. Till then, here are a few samples of my progress.

Also, my sister is getting married next week and I'm going down early to help out, so I will not be blogging next Thursday.

Character Exploration: Priscilla

I've been doing some rough character explorations for this octo/squid girl lately. I don't know a whole lot about her yet, just that her name is Priscilla, she rescues and cares for injured sea creatures, and she's a vegetarian. She also seems a bit shy and probably uses camouflage to stay out of sight. I also realized that I actually like doing quick, rough sketches when I'm trying to figure out who a character is; it helps me focus more on what I'm discovering and less on how the drawing turns out. Everything will eventually need to be polished, of course, but in the beginning, it's nice to have the freedom to do scribble drawings and write badly spelled notes.
