Wow, March is pretty much over already! Time goes by so quickly. Anyway, here are this month's sketches.

Grey paper sketches

I had several possible projects for today, all of which got hung up at one point or another. So, here are a few sketches I did in the grey paper sketchbook Jon got me this week. I haven't worked in grey paper for who knows how long. Using white as the dominant color is an interesting change of process. Plus, it's a good way to use up those white pencils that never see any action!

March skill building : (More) Mountains and musicians

A few musician studies and some more mountains for that painting I mentioned last month. I'm finally getting closer to actually starting it!

Car sketches

This post is all about the idea, not the final product. I decided back last August to start keeping sketchbooks in the car and sketch in them while riding in the passenger seat. Needless to say, 98.7% of what gets drawing in my car sketchbooks is ugly, which is why I haven't shared them till now. But the idea of sketching as much as possible is something I've been trying to be more disciplined about. Plus, drawing in a moving car has it's own unique challenges. You have about four seconds to capture the way something looks before it zooms out of sight, forcing you to throw down its' basic shape as quickly and succinctly as possible. There's little to no time for details. And, since it's so hard to produce a "good" drawing when you sketch in the car, you don't get hung up on your failures.

So, here is a very small selection from my most recent car sketchbook. (Also, I don't always sketch in green crayon, I just happened to have one with me at the time.)

February Sketchbook '14

I feel like this month's sketchbook sketches were a bit...lame. I'm going to blame it on all the craziness that transpired in February and hope that you guys are ok with what I have to offer. Better luck next time, I guess.

Snippets: A Pocket Anthology of Images and Oddity (part 1)

So, I've been working on a semi big project for nearly a month and I'm finally ready to share the first part of it with you guys!! Back in December, I came across a book called The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories. It was filled with short sentences and accompanying illustrations. Inspired, I decide to try creating my own take on the concept. My goal is to assemble and illustrate 30 story sentences total and just finished the first 10 this week! Right now I'm supposed to be packing and getting ready for a trip to Virginia for my Grandpa's funeral, but I decided to share my progress super quick.

Also, thank you so much to everyone who has expressed sympathy for me and my family. It was hard to lose my Grandpa, but at the same time we are all happy that he's with Jesus now. I am anticipating that this weekend will be hard, but also joyful as we celebrate his life.

February Skill Building: Mountians

Sorry this post is a bit late. Things have been weird, sad, and eventful around here. My grandpa passed away yesterday and we had a sizable winter storm today, so there's been a lot to deal with. Anyway, here are some quick mountain studies I did for a painting this currently in process.
